More than PC

As we were sharing promises of God in a recent worship service this one especially drew my attention:

The Lord your God is with you,

He is mighty to save.

He will take great delight in you,

He will quiet you with his love,

He will rejoice over you with singing."

                                             Zephaniah 3:17 (NIV)

So, I’ve been reflecting on that passage for a couple of days. I notice that this verse, like quite a few others, describes God with both masculine and feminine qualities.

He is mighty to save has a distinctly masculine-warrior feel to it.

He will take great delight in you seems neither male nor female.

He will quiet you with his love is a maternal image.

He will rejoice over you with singing again seems gender neutral.

I’m reminded of Genesis 1:27:  So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. In this passage we learn that the image of God is somehow represented in our maleness and femaleness. There is something about God that connects with us as men and women. Obviously, this is more than politically correct vocabulary. It is even more than a caring choice of words. It is an expression of Who God is. God is for you, whoever you are.

As amazing as God is, we can connect with Him, and He with us. He saves, delights, loves, rejoices. These are things we know, too.
