First Denver Friends Church Disaster Service  2012

Friends Disaster Service-Texas Area is expecting a group in from Colorado to work the week of Feb. 20-24 (note: date changed from 14-19 to 20-24). We will, hopefully, be sheet rocking the interior of the house. We are wondering who else will be available to work that week. Yes, there is still work to be done. We will take help from one day to the entire week, whatever is convenient for you. Let us know if you can help.

Blessings from God as you strive to serve Him. Looking forward to
hearing from you.

At Quaker Ridge Camp

Dear Friends,

I was at camp Jan. 17th &18th with my Sunday School class helping to get ready to put up trim in the basement. Most of the class sanded and stained about 6,000 Lineal feet of trim board.

I asked Dave Milton what we as churches could do to help him get this project done before our permit runs out  this spring. He said that individuals or groups could come up during the week (Every weekend until summer is booked for camps). They will feed and house you while you work. If you are interested in going to camp but it would be helpful to be reimbursed for travel I have some funds  to do that.

What they need done in the next 2 to 3 months include (in order almost?) Painting, staining, doors hung, windows and doors trimmed, plumbing, drywall hung, (taped and textured ?), tile ( maybe).

This is our last chance to do 2 things, 1- cut down on the cost and 2-get done before our permit runs out. If we do not get it done by spring, any thing we do after that point puts us in the new regulations and could cause us to have to sprinkle the building and other things that will run the cost up tremendously.

Please give me a call at 303-477-1921 or E-mail me at:  jdougholcombe@gmail.com  or call Dave Milton at 1-719-3044062 (At camp) His e-mail is:  dave@quakerridgecamp.org

Rocky Mountain Friends Disaster Service  2009

Friends Disaster Service-Texas Area is planning the first week of May 4-8, for a designated work week. The hurricane hit many months ago, but the work continues. We have picked up homes from CORE, who have left the area. There is still plenty of work to be done. If you have a group that can work but can't make it for that particular week, let us know and see if we can't coordinate something to fit your schedule.

If you could contact Doug Holcombe at: 303-477-1921 or sdholcombe@juno.com

Greensburg July (Rebuilding begins)
Well it was not as busy as last year, but we still had lots to do. This year is shaping up to be potentially the busiest of all. With the Tornado that hit Greensburg and then the next night that touched down north of Haviland. There was a tornado that went through Windsor Colorado this spring and the damage was considerable. I have met with the  group that is responsible for rebuilding this community and will continue to attend their meetings.

July 16th-28th Greensburg Kansas
I went to work in Greensburg with the Texas and Mid America FDS groups to work on two different house projects. We rehabbed a house that had been damaged badly and build one from the foundation up. the first week I supervised a group of Catholic kids (high school and college age) and also repair a couple walls that had been demolished during the tornado. The bigger group (about 30 ) Were rebuilding the John Unruh House from the ground up. Bill  Edwards (Cooter) was over seeing this project. Friday at Noon we were down to 6 of us and at lunch we were sitting there and talking about how the roof was going to get felted and shingled as every one but me was leaving early the next morning. About then a young man by the name of James Bond showed up. He said he had 30 young adults that needed something to do before they left Sunday morning. Thank you Lord. We said come on over. They helped us finish the sheeting and most of the felt by dark Friday. The next morning I supervised about twenty of this new group and we worked until 8:00 PM and finished the roof minus one bundle of cap shingles). Monday I was by myself and went to Wichita to pick up cap shingles and electrical supplies. The rest of the week I ran 1300 feet of romex to the lights and plugs in the house. Mr. Unruh who is 80 yrs. old was very thankful for our effort.

Holly Colorado
Within days of the tornado that wiped out 70 homes in Holly Co. I was in touch with a lady in that area who was  running the relief response. They had a tremendous response from the surrounding towns and the agriculture  community that they did not need any help immediately. I told her that after things got further along that there probably be those that would have unmet need and to give me a call. In July she did e-mail me and wondered if we could come help a couple of individuals that needed repairs on a roof. I could not get away at that time and I had no luck finding anyone that could go.

Lafitte Louisiana
Peggy Bopp to Lafitte Louisiana to cook for a large group organized by Eastern Region and Texas area FDS January 20th to February 3rd.

Haviland Kansas
Peggy Bopp and Elena Millican for a week in Greensburg and Haviland Kansas organized by the Kansas and Texas FDS. Kirk Miller to Greensburg and Haviland May 17th to the 23rd.
